Automata I & II

Between the Buried and Me

By: Alex Horner

Following the last lack-luster LP: “Coma Ecliptic”, Automata I & II is a refreshing release full of rocking riffs and some ragtime rhythm. BTBAM, hailing from Raleigh, North Carolina has always been at the forefront of the progressive metal scene. Their discography is legendary and Automata I & II is a worthy addition to the ranks.

The two part album feels like two killer EPs joined forces to create one giant meteor that absolutely destroys. True to BTBAM’s style both albums have a great flow with well mixed transitions; best enjoyed when listened to in order. It’s hard to pick out the best tracks on these albums as every song is a banger in its own right. The obvious choices are “Condemned To The Gallows” and “Millions” as both of these singles from Automata I have awesome music videos. That beings said, Automata II is the true winner in the I vs II matchup. This becomes apparent after listening to “Voice of Trespass” a track that brings back some of the best parts of “Colors” with some added spice from a horn section.

Automata I & II is a truly enjoyable listening experience: challenging, fun and heavy all at the same time. BTBAM has done it again!
