Lush

Snail Mail

By: Nic Stewart

Lush: “growing luxuriantly. very rich and providing great sensory pleasure.”

This is the name of the debut album from singer-songwrighter Lindsey Jordan’s indie rock project Snail Mail. Ripe with elaborate and clean guitar work, sad yet sincere vocals, and simply outstanding production, Lush proves that Jordan is no amateur at her craft. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Liz Phair, Helium, Television and more, Jordan has harnessed her creative ability and created something beautiful.

Although containing emotional lyrics that may remind you of that first heartbreak or real dramatic experience, these are not just teenage musings. These are songs sung with fervency and honesty.

Another great aspect of this album are the variations in style and tone throughout. From the more upbeat Pristine to the softer sound of Stick and then the bouncy groove of Golden Dream. Jordan displays her songwriting skill with an array of vocal aptness. Then the hit single Heat Wave containing layered melodies that are so catchy. A true summertime vibe.

On this debut we get a glimpse of Jordan’s intricate world in the most eloquent way. Like an endless pool on a hot summer day, this is an album to dive into. With so much depth in her vocal ability, guitar work, and knack for getting through to you on an emotional level, there is so much to appreciate in this album.

Not only does this album “provide great sensory pleasure,” but it also makes a promise that this young artist will continue to grow luxuriantly. Catch Snail Mail in North America this summer. Tour dates here.
